Sometimes saying no is the best thing you can do for your client, for yourself, your career and your company -especially if you own it.

Sometimes you’re just saying no to a project, sometimes you’re saying no to a client.

When you work with a client where you don’t share the same values it is best to say thanks but no thanks. If you stay, you will be adding friction and that will lead to frustration for everyone. The best solution is to leave the project to a point where you know it can be taken over by someone who will be a better fit. You may lose this deal, but you will gain integrity; one is a short term loss, the other one a long term investment.

Saying no to a client is also responsible and ethical. Especially when they’re asking for something you know it won’t work and it will be a waste of their budget. Most likely they’ll finish that project just the way they wanted it with someone else. But you added value, even if it wasn’t valued by the client.

Working with a client should be fun, productive and add value to the client just as much as it adds value to you. And not just monetarily.

Like Ury Williams says “saying No will protect ourselves and serve everyone’s interests”. It may not ultimately lead to a Yes, but it will definitely lead to a positive outcome.
